Orton uses materials that are common to the ceramic industry. Depending on the temperature range they are designed to work within, they will consist of some combination of any of the following materials; Kaolin, ball clay, glass frit, alumina, and other inorganic minerals. Also, a small amount of organic binder is added.
The dimension that is of most importance is the diameter of the TempChek. As the TempChek is heated within its working range, it will undergo shrinkage. The proper way to measure the amount of
shrinkage is to place the TempChek into the Orton Desktop gauge so the product type and batch code are visible. The gauge will measure the diameter of the TempChek. You may use a set of calipers to measure the
diameter of the part, but, error is introduced with this method of measurement.
They are able to measure within +/- 3 degrees C. The temperature data is based on a heating schedule of 1°C/min along with a hold at peak temperature for 60 minutes.
They are made from materials that are shelf stable and will not degrade over time. They do not have a shelf life. They need to be kept in a dry location.
