Testing

In addition to Materials Testing, Orton's technical staff regularly conducts projects related to materials or product evaluation, failure analysis, product improvement, development of firing schedules, and design of special test equipment. Each project is set up to meet the objectives of the client. Typically, a client defines the problem and presents it to Orton. Orton's technical staff analyzes approaches to approach the problem and presents this to the client in the form of a proposal, along with an estimate of time and costs. This leads to a work statement, program plan a purchase order. Orton's technical staff frequently identifies unique approaches to solving or understanding materials, equipment and processing problems.

Orton has established relationships with consultants and other organizations and can coordinate projects that utilize the services of these individuals or companies. Orton also works closely with the faculty at The Ohio State University, who can support consulting contracts with Orton.

Confidentiality is maintained for all projects and intellectual property rights are passed on to the client.

Orton's capabilities include materials engineers, electronics selection and design, software programming, equipment design and automation, and process engineering.

Contact Dr. Joseph Homeny for more information as to how we can support your engineering, testing, firing or product improvement needs.

The Center's staff are actively involved in the development of new test methods and the evaluation of existing tests. We can do comparative evaluations on specific materials. Capabilities exist to evaluate sensors, design or apply electronics, write specialized software, and design and build test equipment.

The Center also undertakes proprietary research and testing projects for clients on a contract basis. These may include ceramic/refractory materials evaluation, development/characterization of new test procedures or evaluation of firing behavior. Following discussion of the project with a client, a proposal is prepared outlining the work to be performed, project schedule, and estimated cost. The Center utilizes the services of private consultants, University faculty, and others to complement its own professional staff and testing capabilities.
