Orton Materials Technology Residency

  • 1 min read

Most summer programs hand students a project. This one asks them to bring one that already works at lab scale.

The Orton Materials Technology Residency is a new paid summer program from The Edward Orton Jr. Ceramic Foundation, in partnership with The American Ceramic Society and the Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation. A student spends 10 to 12 weeks at Orton advancing a ceramic, glass, or advanced materials technology they are personally driving from lab scale toward a repeatable industrial process.

What students receive:

 • $22.50 per hour

 • Housing and travel assistance

 • Access to Orton’s batch production, testing, laboratory, and instrument assembly facilities

 • Support in developing a commercialization roadmap

 • A capstone presentation to leadership from Orton, ACerS, and CGIF

Undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students are eligible. The program is designed for technologies at or near proof of concept, not early-stage ideas.

Up to two residencies are available for Summer 2027. Applications close December 3, 2026.

Students: Ready to take your technology beyond the lab?

Faculty and mentors: Know someone who is? Please share this opportunity with them.
